The brand Vans was founded many, many years ago in 1966 by a Dutch man (yes, it’s true!) named Paul van Doren. The first shop was established in the US. The brand was targeted at active youngsters who were into sports such as snow- and skateboarding. This was only a small niche in the sports-wear market. However, throughout the years Vans gained market share significantly through the popularity among skateboarders, because of the shoe’s good grip on skateboards. Moreover, people who did not do extreme sports wore the Vans more and more. Those most people were mostly dressed ‘alternatively’.

In the last couple of years a greater public wears Vans. Youngsters with a variety of styles in terms of clothing started wearing Vans. Especially the models ‘Authentic’ and the ‘Authentic Lo Pro’ are extremely popular in the sneaker market.

Why not at the door; when entering Vapiano you’re welcomed by the host at the door. He will supply you with your personal Vapiano card that will let you pay for your food and drinks. Later more on this card. When you have your card you immediately walk into an environment that is both modern as cosy and has a slight italian twist. You have tables with barchairs and lounge couches or lounge chairs. What you also will notice is the amount of plants that are all over the place. Some of them are on the tables together with spicy oils that you can use. And some of the plants are on the side in huge wall trays. The plants are there for garnishing and spicing your diner. Bascilicum and thym. In some Vapiano’s you will find big olive trees rising from the high tables.

The menu

The menu contains all kinds of nice italian dishes like antipasti, pasta, pizza and some nice desserts; who doesn’t like a ‘Death by chocolate’ .

Ordering

Sorry, no ordering at the tables but you need to get it yourself. To the side are counters where you can order the dish of your choice. These counters are labelled with the dishes they serve. When you order Pasta it is freshly made in front of you with frsh pasta and other ingredients. Same goes for the antipasti. For the pizza it is a whole different story; you need to order the pizza and you get a buzzer that you can take to your table, once its done you’re buzzed to pick it up. Tip on the side: when ordering for 2 or more, order the pizza first and then go order the pasta. Most of the time the pasta and pizza are done at the same time.

The card

The card that you get at the door is personal and keeps credits for 50 euros. When you order your dish you’re asked to place the card on a reader and the dish is charged from your card. This holds a great benefit when you come in with a group as you don’t need to figure out in the end who needs to pay what; everyone pays with their own card. Don’t lose your card! You will be billled the full €50,-.

Take away

As I mentioned before, the pastas are fresh made in the restaurant. You can buy these in boxes for use at home. You can even come in for take away. Just ask at the counter and they will take care of it.

Conclusion

I love it, the whole ambiance is great for dinner or drinks with friends and the food is good. Also the price:

Pizza averages €8,- and same goes for the pasta. Compare that with your mc donalds meal that isnt fresh and isnt healthy, thats a pretty good deal.

In the end it will be the fatties who will distract the zombies from you because of you running faster. And of course the fact that your big boned friends are just the ‘meal-deal’ in zombieland.

But how to keep fit so you will run the fastest? Well we find just the thing for that.

Zombies, RUN! is an iPhone app(Android is coming, don’t worry) that is a total immersion game.
The game, that you start at the beginning of your run/jogging/walk, starts of with radio transmissions in your ear buds of your female helicopter pilot. She tells you where she is taking you. A township that is surrounded by zombies and in which the population is in need of supplies. The helicopter crashes and unfortunately the pilot dies. It is now you and the radio guy in the township. This guy will guide you to the township but not before you need to run past an abandonment hospital to pick up some important files from Center of Disease Control…..

The game is totally audio and the radio transmissions come and go and in between you’re entertained by your favorite iTunes music. You don’t have to look at your iPhone for the whole 25-30 minutes and everything is explained in audio. While running you hear a computer voice telling what you pick up as supplies. After a while the fun starts: ZOMBIE ENCOUNTERS!

Your audio guide has a radar of some sort and can tell if you’re being chased by Zombies. He will warn you if they’re coming. When they to, you hear them breathing and you need to start running faster for about a minute. While you’re being chased beeps that come at intervals will tell if you need to run faster. If you don’t you will loose supplies to distract the zombies away from you.

When done and you find yourself sitting on a chair back home , feeling lucky you survived, you can attend to the township on your screen. By handing out supplies on the map of the town you can upgrade certain areas and let the population grow.

Each new mission that you start will open up new possibilities in the game and will gradually tell the whole story of how the whole apocalyps started and what is REALLY going on.

Conclusion:
I’m a bit of an digi-fit geek; I own a Fitbit, an Withings scale, an ANT+ heartbeat sensor with iPhone receiver and i’m a huge fan of Runkeeper. I’m very positive on how this new app turns out and makes it a lot more fun to go out running. This is mostly because I find running a bit boring and this way I’m in a game/story and my actions can make a difference. Negative points about the whole app is that there is no connection with Runkeeper yet and it also doesn’t allow heartbeat registration. The rest of the app is more then worth trying out.
